Texas A&M University Professor of Chemistry and Thaman Professor of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Dr. John L. Hogg will be honored Wednesday (March 1) with a 3:30 p.m. reception in Room 109 of the main Chemistry Building to celebrate the release of his new textbook, The World of Chemistry: Essentials
Now in its fourth edition through Thomson Learning, the book is known for effectively presenting chemistry in terms that are understandable to the non-science major.
Hogg, who co-authored the book along with Vanderbilt University's Dr. Melvin D. Joesten and textbook writer Mary E. Castellion, is known for his comprehensive knowledge of chemistry, the ability to generate enthusiasm for the subject in his students and his commitment to promoting its genuine understanding. He is the chief academic advisor for undergraduate chemistry majors as well as the driving force behind Texas A&M's popular Chemistry Road Show
program, which helps introduce more than 2,000 people and countless Texas schoolchildren to the wonders of chemistry each year.
A member of the Texas A&M faculty since 1975, Hogg boasts about 40 publications in the general areas of physical, organic and biorganic chemistry. A decorated instructor as well, he has received many teaching awards, including a 2005 Texas A&M University Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching and the University's Mervin and Annette Peters Advising Award as the outstanding undergraduate faculty advisor for 2004. In addition, Hogg was one of the initial four faculty members at Texas A&M to earn the title of University Professor of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence in 1996.
Hogg received his bachelor's of science degree in chemistry from Southwestern State College in Oklahoma and his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas.
