COLLEGE STATION --

Dr. Simon J. Sheather has been appointed professor and head of the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University, effective March 1, 2005, announced H. Joseph Newton, dean of the College of Science.

Sheather comes to Texas A&M from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, where he served as professor and head of the statistics and operations group and as associate dean of research in the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM). During his 18-year career there, he received the school's inaugural Award for Excellence in Research and was recognized as a three-time recipient of the AGSM Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Teaching.

A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Sheather has authored some of the most commonly cited papers on statistical principles ranging from visual analog scales to kernel density estimation, earning him a citations-based ranking as one of the top 200 mathematicians worldwide.

"Texas A&M is very fortunate to attract a man of great statistical expertise who also has a proven record as an administrator," Newton said. "We expect great things from Dr. Sheather."

As head of Statistics, Sheather has administrative responsibility for the Department, which includes curriculum, faculty and program development. He also will oversee its external relations as he works to attract additional sources of funded research and financial support.

"The Statistics Department at Texas A&M University is recognized for many significant innovations in both core and multidisciplinary research," Sheather said. "I am excited by the opportunity to further build up the Department, as the prospect exists for it to be consistently ranked among the very top statistics departments in the nation."

In addition to worldwide prestige in research, writing and teaching, Sheather brings extensive experience in distance learning, having taught remotely-run courses in locations throughout Australia, including Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane. He also boasts considerable consulting experience, particularly in the application of statistical methods to business situations.

Sheather received his Ph.D. in statistics from La Trobe University under the supervision of J.S. Maritz after earning his bachelor of science in mathematical statistics with first class honors from The University of Melbourne.
