COLLEGE STATION --

Norbert A. Hartmann, Jr. '64 has given an endowment gift, matched by Hewlett Packard Development Company, L.P., to support graduate students and other programs in applied statistics in the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University.

"Being at Texas A&M was one of the best times of my life," Hartmann said. "I wanted to give something back to the school that was so good to me while I was there."

Hartmann said he wanted the recipients to get the opportunity to pursue a career that is beneficial both to them and the profession. The fund was arranged so it can also be used by the department to help both students and staff in their professional development.

Hartmann currently works for Hewlett Packard, and he felt that with the matching funds, it was a great way to give back to the university.

"Others have done this (endowing funds) before me, and I wanted to do the same," Hartmann said. "It is a great opportunity to give in a positive way, especially with Hewlett Packard matching the funds."

Hartmann earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics in '64 and completed both a master's and Ph.D. in statistics by 1970. He currently lives in Oregon.
