Dr. William B. Smith '60, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, has been honored by the Department of Statistics in the College of Science at Texas A&M University with the naming of a $30,000 quasi-endowment created to enhance the international focus of the faculty as a tribute to his significant contributions to the department.

The award will promote travel possibilities for junior faculty and invite faculty from other institutions to give presentations in an effort to encourage international exchange among the entire statistics faculty.

During his term at Texas A&M, Dr. Smith served as editor-in-chief of Communications in Statistics, which is published by the Marcel Dekker Publishing Company. His leadership in this effort and his international research collaborations led the department to create the award, which has been named the William B. Smith/Marcel Dekker International Travel Award.

Smith is currently the executive director of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and was previously a program officer at the National Science Foundation, as well as a past executive associate dean of the College of Science and head of the Department of Statistics.

"Bill was the department head of statistics when most of the present senior faculty were hired," said Dr. James Calvin, current head of the statistics department. "His help in building the department into a nationally recognized program with a strong international presence is something we are very pleased to recognize with this award."

Smith officially retired from Texas A&M in May 2003, after more than 35 years of service to the university.
