Texas A&M University statistics professors James A. Calvin, Randall L. Eubank and Suojin Wang were named Fellows of the American Statistical Association (ASA) Tuesday (Aug. 15) at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Indianapolis, Ind.

Being named an ASA fellow is an honor signifying an individual's outstanding service to and leadership in the field of statistics and statistical science. The ASA named 55 members Fellows this year.

"Election to Fellow of the ASA is a singular honor that recognizes outstanding individual contributions to the advancement of statistics," said Norman Breslow, chairman of the Committee on Fellows. "The Fellows elected for the year 2000 have a wide variety of backgrounds and talents that illustrate the strength of the Association and the broad impact of statistics in modern society. They well deserve our congratulations."

Calvin, professor and head of the statistics department, earned his doctorate in statistics at Colorado State University in 1985. Calvin is being recognized by the ASA for his statistical theory and applications research, excellence in teaching and administration and significant leadership in consulting collaboration.

Eubank earned his doctorate in statistics from Texas A&M University in 1979. Eubank is being recognized for excellence in research in the areas of spline smoothing and nonparametric regression, excellence in teaching and outstanding editorial service.

Wang earned his doctorate in statistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. He is being recognized for excellence in teaching and research in the areas of small sample inference via higher order methods, sample surveys and missing and mismeasured data.

Founded in 1839, the American Statistical Association is a scientific and educational society devoted to advancing the statistics profession and promoting excellence in the application of statistical science to all aspects of human endeavor.
