William B. Smith, professor of statistics at Texas A&M University, has accepted the position of executive director of the American Statistical Association. Smith, who is on leave from Texas A&M, is an internationally known leader in the statistical profession. He plans to increase efforts to enhance the reputation and health of the discipline, support the membership and other statisticians, and provide for an efficient and healthy organization. "I view the American Statistical Association as our leading professional organization, one with the responsibility and opportunity of effectively representing our discipline not only to its members, but also to broader communities," said Smith. "As data gathering itself has changed dramatically in only a few years, so must our community meet this opportunity for unprecedented use of statistics."
