James A. Calvin, professor and head of the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University, has been selected to receive the 2002 Don Owen Award by the American Statistical Association (ASA), announced Michael Sherman, president of the Southeast Texas Chapter of the ASA.

The Don Owen Award honors the memory of Donald B. Owen, a distinguished professor of statistics at Southern Methodist University who died in 1991. Intended as a tribute to his illustrious career that spanned academia and industry, the award is presented annually by the San Antonio Chapter of the ASA to a statistician who embodies Owens' three-fold accomplishments: excellence in research; statistical consultation; and service to the statistical community.

Calvin was nominated for the award by the Southeast Texas Chapter of the ASA, said Sherman, an associate professor of statistics at Texas A&M.

"The Southeast Texas Chapter of the American Statistical Association was very excited to nominate James Calvin for this nationally competitive award," Sherman said. "Jim embodies the ideal balance of research and service. His research has advanced both statistical methodological development and solutions to practical real world problems. His direction of many graduate students and his work on the editorial boards of several high profile statistical journals is also exemplary. We are very pleased that Jim has been recognized in this way by the ASA."

A member of the Texas A&M faculty since 1991, Calvin holds secondary appointments in veterinary anatomy and public health, epidemiology and biostatistics, and toxicology. In addition, he is an associate vice president for research at Texas A&M.
