COLLEGE STATION --

Dr. Jianhua Huang, professor and acting head of the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University, has been named associate director of the Texas A&M Institute of Data Science (TAMIDS).

Huang, who joined the Texas A&M Statistics faculty in 2005 and is the inaugural holder of the Arseven/Mitchell Chair in Astronomical Statistics, will lead the educational activities of TAMIDS in association with the institute's director, Dr. Nick Duffield. TAMIDS' educational priorities are to work with Texas A&M's colleges to establish a master's degree, certificates and minors in data science and to develop short courses to make data science education more widely available on campus.

Huang, who has served as interim head of Statistics since July 1, has directed the department's graduate studies for the past four years. He also served one year as acting associate dean of graduate studies for the College of Science (June 2017 - May 2018).

Huang received his doctorate in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1997 and spent seven years as a faculty member at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania prior to coming to Texas A&M. He was promoted to full professor in March 2008 and appointed to the Arseven/Mitchell Chair in September 2017.

In recent years, Huang's interests have focused on developing novel statistical methods for solving data-enabled research problems in collaboration with scientists and engineers. He has developed interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers in several Texas A&M departments, including atmospheric sciences, biochemistry and biophysics, electrical and computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering, physics and astronomy, and veterinary integrative biosciences.
