Dr. Suojin Wang, professor of statistics at Texas A&M University, has been named associate dean for assessment in the Texas A&M College of Science, announced Dean Meigan Aronson.

Wang joined the Texas A&M Department of Statistics faculty in 1990 and holds a joint appointment as a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics in the Texas A&M Health Science Center. He also is a member of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Bioinformatics.

As associate dean for assessment, Wang will oversee all related activities within the college, coordinating as appropriate across the university and affiliated units. He assumes the position previously held since 2013 by Texas A&M biologist Dr. Ginger E. Carney, who is set to become Dean of Science at the University of Idaho in mid-August.

Wang began his independent career at Texas A&M shortly after earning his Ph.D. in statistics at the University of Texas at Austin in 1988. During his nearly 30-year career in academia, he has developed an international reputation as one of the leading experts in nonparametric and semiparametric statistical methodology and small sample statistical inference, having done foundational work in saddlepoint approximations, the bootstrap and other areas.

Beyond his important contributions to statistical theory and methodology, Wang is also known as one of the most effective instructors and graduate student mentors on campus. In addition, he is actively involved in statistics distance education. He has earned the Texas A&M Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching at both the university (2005) and college levels (1997) and is a two-time recipient of the Texas A&M University System Student-Led Award for Teaching Excellence (2010, 2011).

In 2002, Wang was honored as one of 12 University Faculty Fellows, a five-year, $100,000 award intended to reward and encourage excellence in scholarship among mid-career faculty members in support of the Vision 2020 goal of elevating the faculty and its teaching, research and scholarship.

An elected fellow of the American Statistical Association (2000) and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (2001), Wang is also an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (2000). Most recently, he spent 2013 on sabbatical after being awarded a prestigious visiting fellowship for mathematical sciences research at Australian National University. Wang also served as editor-in-chief for the Journal of Nonparametric Statistics from 2007 to 2012.
