COLLEGE STATION --

Vanessa Nordell, senior academic advisor II in the Department of Biology at Texas A&M University, has been selected as one of four campus-wide recipients of the 2014 President's Award for Academic Advising.

Nordell will be honored for her exceptional counsel and career guidance next month by Texas A&M Interim President Mark A. Hussey as part of the annual University Advisors and Counselors Spring Awards Breakfast, set for May 1.

"Many of us in the department have long recognized Vanessa's professional and compassionate commitment to our students," said Dr. Thomas McKnight, professor and head of the Department of Biology. "She won our departmental award for outstanding staff member in 2012, and I am delighted to see that the wonderful job she does of keeping our students on track -- and sometimes helping them get back on track -- is now garnering recognition from the broader campus community."

Recipients, who each receive $2,000 and a plaque, are selected by a committee composed of three students, the president-elect of University Advisors and Counselors' Executive Board, and a representative appointed by Texas A&M's Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Programs and Associate Provost for Academic Services. Selection is based on nomination packets that include letters from fellow advisors, students and faculty.

Dr. Timothy P. Scott, associate dean for undergraduate programs in the College of Science, also received the honor in 2005, as did the Department of Biology's Christine Farris and the Department of Physics and Astronomy's Sandi Smith in 2009 and the Department of Chemistry's Holly C. Gaede in 2013.
