Matusevich, Bangerth Earn Sloan Research Fellowships
COLLEGE STATION -- Dr. Laura F. Matusevich and Dr. Wolfgang Bangerth, both assistant professors of mathematics at Texas A&M University, are among 118 outstanding young scientists, mathematicians and economists selected by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation as 2008 Research Fellows.
Each receives a two-year, $50,000 grant to support their respective research interests.
"The Sloan Research Fellowships support the work of exceptional young researchers early in their academic careers, and often at pivotal stages in their work," says Paul L. Joskow, president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
Sloan Fellowships have been awarded since 1955 in science and mathematics and since 1983 in economics. Thirty-five recipients have gone on to win the Nobel Prize in their fields, while 14 have received the Fields Medal, the top international honor in mathematics. In addition, Sloan Fellows have accounted for 8 of the 13 winners of the John Bates Clark Medal, generally considered the top honor for young economists.
